Mira’s Short Stories 1

These are short stories, the first part of the legend Mira from our street. Mira is probably the oldest on the street, a housewife all her life who knows those old stories. Traditionally, every October we stop by her place for coffee and to tell us some stories she still remembers about curses, vampires, ghosts, witches and the like. Here are a few short stories:

1. Many unmarried people in our street – Since we have a lot of unmarried middle-aged people, Mira attributes this to supernatural phenomena. She says that while those houses were being built, some woman (who is a witch, Mira knows her) threw something bewitched into the foundation and spewed something on the street, and since then all those people have had no luck finding a spouse. And even when winter comes, the snow mostly blows and the wind blows it to their side to make them much colder.

2. The old man who predicts – Mira told me a story that she knows an example from the village where a husband and wife had some problems, and the wife thought that some magic had been cast on them. The husband did not believe it, and once the wife forced him to drive her on a motorcycle to an old man in another village who “sees these things”. The husband barely accepted, he drove the woman there and sweared the whole time. When they came to the old man, he told the woman that she could go in, but the husband could not because he was cursing him all the time, somehow he knew. He told the woman to look in their barn that something (some small object) had been thrown or buried there and that they should get rid of it. When they got home, they really found the haunted object where the old man explained and set it on fire.

3. Scary owl – Mira says that in her village some relatives used to have a bird come every evening, actually an owl, most likely, and make noise above the house at the same time. A couple of older women noticed it, got together and talked about it. One of them asked who the owl was shouting for, because it is believed that if it makes such a noise every night above the house, someone will die soon. The next day, that very woman died, so they said that’s who she was shouting for, actually her.
