The fly (1958) movie review

Rating: 8/10

The Fly from 1958, a classic that belongs to the old black and white classics, although it is among the first in color. 1961 is the first year when most of the films were released in color rather than black and white, so they are considered newer classics from the 1960s, or the 1970s when “slashers” began with Freddy Krueger, Michael Myerson from “Halloween”, Jason from “Friday the 13th”, the demon from “The Exorcist”, etc… The interesting thing is that his sequels are “Return of the Fly (1959) and Curse of the Fly (1965)” black and white for some reason!

Probably because this fly character is considered an old classic, I’ve seen it listed as such in several places. Otherwise, the movie is a little different, because wherever there are some characters/monsters, there people get killed, they always commit at least one murder. There is no murder here, only suicide. A scientist built some teleportation device, it didn’t always work out right until he finally perfected it. And outside of everyone’s knowledge, he applied the experiment on himself. At that moment, a fly entered the device, and their atoms mixed.

He got his head and part of his body from a giant fly, one arm remained his (same as Baxter Stockman from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Since he could not return to his original form at the end, he had to call a woman to help him commit suicide (because he started going crazy, losing control over his body and behavior). No one believed the woman, they declared her crazy (she pretended to be crazy at the beginning to protect her son), until the inspector and her cousin were convinced (because they found that little fly that got a human head in return).

The film is well made, it has a good quality The story and effects are good—the monster is well-executed, as is the teleportation device and its effects… it’s worth watching. The only thing I didn’t like is that they could have shown at least one kill where the monster actually kills a person (which is an unwritten rule in movies like this) so we could see what it’s capable of. A legendary actor Vincent Price is always a great addition to any horror movie. 8/10 from me.
