The original 1931 Dracula is one of Universal’s most important classics. Based on Stoker’s novel, it was adapted to fit the vision of Dracula prevalent at the time. Instead medieval clothes or long hair, this version of Dracula set an enduring standard—proving that strong marketing works wonders. We see a suave, slicked-back Dracula—a refined gentleman in a sharp outfit (including that iconic cape) that he often uses to intimidate.

Bela Lugosi, the legendary actor, delivered an extraordinary performance as the vampire. While the film isn’t particularly terrifying—as one might expect from movies of that era—the focus lies on atmospheric, old-school effects: the mist, candles, cobwebs, bats, and graves—classic effects done to perfection. This portrayal of Dracula set the benchmark for other “classic” vampires and Draculas. Like other Universal classics, it is a top-tier choice for the Halloween season.
